Several years ago, we worked with WKC and several Master Chiefs to design this Navy Cutlass to replicate the Model 1860/1861 Cutlass, but with several modern enhancements. We also provide the design background for this piece.

While the US Navy does not currently have a written specification for its cutlass, the US Navy Ceremonial Guard in Washington, DC (Anacostia Annex) uses our cutlass.

This is not a "replica cutlass" that looks OK as long as you are standing 10 feet away, nor is it a "Pirate's Cutlass" with which it is impossible to do manual of arms. Our Navy Cutlass is a ceremonial service piece and is crafted to the same level of workmanship as any of WKC's US military pieces.

  • Guard:
    • Solid-cast brass guard, then plated in 24-carat gold.
    • Mirror-like “shell” is riveted securely to the guard with the traditional 11 rivets.
    • Traditional "French curve" cut that allows the wearer to execute manual of arms.
  • Grip:
    • Leather wrapped with twisted gold wire strands.
  • End Cap:
    • Cast brass, 24-carat gold-plated to a mirror-like finish
  • Blade:
    • Polished, stainless steel, 26-inch blade
    • Etched with “U.S.N.” near the leather stop
    • Unsharpened ceremonial edge, but the blade has a sharp tip
    • Has the fuller (groove)
  • Scabbard:
    • Steel insert to prevent sagging when displayed
    • Covered in black calf leather
  • Included:

Navy Cutlass Design Information

As Marlow White became known in the US Military Sword industry as a provider of top-quality swords at reasonable prices, we began to hear from CPO's regarding the Navy Cutlass. It had become almost impossible to find a quality Cutlass; most either seemed to be "pirates' cutlasses" or replicas that only looked OK when you stood 10 feet from them.

In 2005, we set out to create a Naval Cutlass which members of the Navy would be proud to wear. We partnered with WKC and several Master Chiefs to design the cutlass. The design process took almost a year as we worked through various design challenges.

Naval Cutlass Grip - click for detailed imageAt one point late in the process, we discovered a significant issue: most modern cutlass and cutlass replicas do not allow a Sailor to properly execute manual of arms. Despite having invested many man hours and thousands of dollars in our prototype cutlass design, we scrapped the cutlass design and started over to ensure our cutlass would present a proper manual of arms - smoothly. Below is an e-mail from Master Chief Whitney soon after we announced the production delay.

Since releasing the Cutlass in late 2005, we can truly say that our Naval Cutlass is the best Cutlass available to members of the U.S. Navy. Our Cutlass emulates the model 1860 cutlass design but we are producing it to the same level of standard that all other US Military Swords have.
