How to Wear the Navy CPO Cutlass

Have a question about swords/saber? Click here to visit our informational center.Photo: How to wear the Navy CutlassUnfortunately, the Navy uniform reg is currently silent on the wear of the cutlass. We have a couple of Master Chiefs and Command Master Chiefs working with us to propose a uniform standard to BUPERS. In the meantime, we are deferring to tradition.

To properly wear the cutlass, one will need the throg (frog) (which we currently have, although it only fits our cutlass and is only available when purchasing a cutlass), a plain leather belt with a gold buckle, and gloves.

Certainly, for SDWs, the cutlass is worn over the coat. We propose the same for the SDBs. Unlike the officer sword with the sword slit and belt with straps, the CPO cutlass cannot be worn through the sword slit in the SDB coat because it is not "slung" like the officer sword.

We hope this interim answer helps. We'll post more to our web site as we learn it.
